Titus the then Emperor of Rome, besieged the city of Jerusalem for 6 months. No one could get in or out. This was in an attempt to starve out the Jews to surrender. The Romans surrounded the city. Hunger and starvation became great; the people resorted to eating dead flesh to survive. (Remember Jesus had predicted that happening 37 years before see Luke 21 v 20.) As a result of this besiegement 1million Jews died, many of those who survived were taken captive and carried off to the ends of the earth (DIASPORA) the dispersal of history. 70,000 Jewish captives were taken off to Rome to build the Coliseum, where later Christians were fed to the lions for the amusement of the Romans. The destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD is a tremendous tragedy to the Jewish people. However the Gentile believers fled the city of Jerusalem prior to Titus’s besiegement this was because they had remembered and believed the teaching of Christ (see Luke 21v 20) they fled to a city 60 miles north of Jerusalem called Pella. The surviving Jews who stayed, saw the Gentile Christians as Traitors. This caused further separation between the Jewish people and the Gentiles. The separation continued increasing during the 2ND REVOLT, 132 AD, the Jews under the leadership of Barcova a Jewish leader who revolted against Rome and fiercely fought the Romans for 3 years. The revolt ended with the butchering of Jews in 135 AD under Emperor Adrian, in which 500,000 Jews were slaughtered. As blood ran down the streets of Jerusalem. The Romans tried to erase the memory of the Jews from the face of the earth. The Roman RE-NAMED the nation of Israel Palestine after the Philistines who were the ancient enemies of the Jewish people. (Remember the giant Goliath and David; the Philistines were ancient continual enemies of the Jews) The Romans were attempting to rub this in the faces of the Jews, because the Romans hated the Jewish people. The historical name Philistine and Palestine stuck. Jerusalem was also renamed called ALLEH CAPITANIA. Why does Yassar Arafat get up and address Palestine, not because his ancestors settled there, the LAND OF PALESTINE NEVER EXISTED not any more than Alice in Wonderland existed. The Romans called it Palestine and it stuck. It never existed as an autonomous entity. It was ruled by the Romans, The crusaders, both Christians and Islamic, by the Ottoman Empire and then by the British Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. THE PEOPLE WHO CALL THEMSELVES PALESTINIANS TODAY, BEFORE 1948, WERE – JORDANIAN, EGYPTIANS, IRANIAN, SYRIANS. Prior to 1948 PALESTINIANS WERE JEWS!!! Now why did the Jewish People fight the Romans so fiercely, while the other cities and states of the world open their gates to the Romans and offered them to come in? BECAUSE ROME OFFERED THEM ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STABILITY. To the Jewish people Rome was POLYTHEISTIC it was because of the 1st Commandment THOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME 1 MILLION JEWS DIED DEFENDING THE 1ST COMMANDMENT Rome was Polytheistic Rome had many gods, but when Rome placed an EAGLE on the front of the Jewish synagogue the Jews refused to honor the Roman god and fought fiercely. In the same way we as Christians must choose which God we will serve. We will serve someone or something. We serve either Jehovah God of the bible or we serve many gods. Look at what God says in 2nd Kings 17 v 33 “they worship the Lord but they serve also their own god.” Here God was describing a backslidden people. Here they had God in one hand and other gods in the other hand.
